What this actually involves

A motorcycle key is cut from the bike's own lock or its key code rather than copied from a key you no longer have, so losing the last one is not the end of it. The technician works at the machine — driveway, underground garage, roadside — with the cutting equipment on board. Where the bike also carries a transponder, the electronic half is a separate job on the same visit, and you hear which halves yours needs before anything is cut.

Why a bike key is not just a smaller car key

One key usually runs several locks on a motorcycle — the ignition, the fork or steering lock, the seat, and on a touring machine the topcase and panniers. That is convenient right up to the moment the key is lost, because then every one of them is shut at once, including the seat lock standing between you and the battery, the toolkit and the fuse box. The locks themselves are small wafer mechanisms living outdoors in salt and rain, which is why a bike key that has gone stiff is worth mentioning on the phone: sometimes the key has worn, sometimes the lock has, and the fix is not the same one.

When there is nothing left to copy

All-keys-lost is the normal case on a bike rather than the rare one — there is rarely a spare in a kitchen drawer. A key can still be originated by reading the machine's own locks or its key code, so the job is to establish the code, cut to it, and confirm it turns everything it should. What we need from you is the boring half: documents in your name showing the bike is yours. If nobody can establish ownership, we do not cut a key, and on a motorcycle — the easiest vehicle on the road to lift into a van — that policy is doing real work.

How the visit goes

Start to finish, so nothing on the day is a surprise.

  1. Step 01

    Call and describe the bike

Make, model, year, and which locks have stopped being usable. That is what tells us whether this is a cutting job, a programming job, or both, before anyone drives out.

  2. Step 02

    Ownership checked at the bike

Photo ID plus paperwork tying you to the machine — ownership, registration, insurance or a bill of sale. Checked every time, and it protects you more than it inconveniences you.

  3. Step 03

The key is originated on site

Cut from the bike's own lock or code with the equipment we brought. Where a transponder is involved as well, that is programmed in the same visit rather than booked as a second call.

  4. Step 04

Every lock tested before we leave

Ignition, fork lock, seat, and any luggage that runs on the same key. A key that starts the bike but will not open the seat is a half-finished job.

What to expect

  • Keys originated from the bike's own lock or key code — losing the last one does not mean the bike is stuck where it sits

  • Cut at the machine, so nothing has to be trailered to a shop and back

  • Proof of ownership checked before a key is cut — the same rule that stops someone else having one made for your bike

Asked before calling

The questions this job actually gets, answered the way they would be on the phone.

Usually, yes. A key can be originated from the machine's own locks or key code with nothing left to copy. Tell us the make, model and year on the phone, because that is what determines how the key is originated and whether the electronic half needs programming too.
